  • UltraMedia Designs Theater with Perfect Blend of Aesthetics and Acoustics

UltraMedia Designs Theater with Perfect Blend of Aesthetics and Acoustics

Richardson, TX, 10/2/2012 – This acoustically exceptional home cinema system in Westlake was a pleasure from day one. First, our client embraces and loves new technology.  He has owned multiple home theaters and he wanted to step up the performance in this new media room.

Top on the priority list was incorporating proper acoustical treatments when building this new theater. The room is structurally sound, and heavily reinforced with 2x6s. The entire room has been insulated to help keep the sound inside the room and minimize leakage to the rest of the house. The riser base for the back row of chairs was built and reinforced with wood screws, and was fully insulated.  In addition, the walls were sheetrocked with Quietrock, preventing sound from traveling between walls with its high-density coefficient. Because the media room is on the 2nd floor, a sound barrier was added to the floors to provide an additional layer of sound control within the room. The finished walls were treated with custom acoustic panels from Auralex.  We applied absorptive, reflective and diffusive treatments throughout the room to create a well-balanced acoustic environment for music and movies.  It was the crowning touch (and proof that acoustical treatments can be both functional and beautiful) when the interior designer brought in a talented faux painter to create a leather-like texture on the acoustic panels.

Proper (and attractive) acoustical treatments paired with cutting edge electronics, and the results are amazing.  Truly a favorite gathering place for family and friends.

  • UltraMedia Celebrates First Decade of Business

UltraMedia, Inc. Celebrates First Decade of Business

Richardson, TX, 1/2/2012 – February of 2012 marks the 10th business anniversary of UltraMedia.  The company opened its doors in the 2002 recession, and extends many thanks to its loyal clients for 10 years of patronage, allowing us to thrive and grow.

UltraMedia is a team of dedicated technology experts, each with 15-25 years of experience-- most of which has been spent working together, in one or both of Pat Johnson’s two other successful AV companies.  UltraMedia’s President, Pat Johnson, said, “We are a cohesive team, expecting as much of one another as we do ourselves.  Home technology is our career—not a stepping stone to another position at another company.”

We’ve seen a lot of growth and change in the industry over the years.  We remember when HD was just a rumor, and 3D was seen only in special theaters.  Telephones were just that—and controlling home technology from an iPhone wasn’t possible.  We’ve kept up with changes with much training, and hands-on experimentation in our office showroom.

From hanging a television, to a high-end audiophile dream installation, we appreciate each client, and would like to thank the wonderful designers we’ve had the opportunity to work with over the years.  Without our clients, large and small, we wouldn’t have the opportunity to celebrate ten years of doing what we love.

  • UltraMedia, Inc. Goes “Tech” in Texas Contemporary Theater with Auralex

UltraMedia, Inc. Goes “Tech” in Texas Contemporary Theater with Auralex

Richardson, TX, 11/18/2011 - When Mike Brock, lead designer for UltraMedia, was asked to install a state-of-the-art entertainment system in a Frisco home, he turned to Auralex® Acoustics for the theater’s acoustical treatments.

The 6,000-square-foot home and party barn boast a fully integrated system, including audio, video, and lighting. Auralex helped to create a high-end entertainment zone where the family can enjoy movies and sporting events.

Auralex's custom panels were installed throughout the theater. The treatments include absorption, diffusion, reflection, and bass trapping, with materials hidden behind the fabric surface. The components are custom fit on site, allowing for dimensional change or room irregularity.

The media room features an attached game room — both spaces decorated in Texas Tech colors, as the homeowners are major university supporters.  The interior designer used three grey in the acoustic panels.  To maintain the Tech theme, the theater features five opaque glass LED columns that shine bright red.

Another feature of the theater is the traditional seating, with a bar and barstools at the back. This presented a unique audio challenge, as the bar was constructed entirely out of metal. To deaden ringing, UltraMedia had the metal posts filled with sand.

The entire theater is constructed of sound-reducing drywall, with a solid core door, to help isolate the space acoustically. The theater features a thick, heavily padded carpet so that no additional ceiling treatment was needed.

The theater features a 9.2 surround system. “We took it as far as we could to make the room sound great and not have any rattles or ringing,” adds Brock. The installation included a long list of high-end home theater gear.

  • Design and Install Lutron HomeWorks

UltraMedia Qualified to Design and Install Lutron HomeWorks QS

Richardson, Texas, 04/11/2011 – UltraMedia’s in-house programmer, Mark Gostomski, is qualified to program Lutron’s new HomeWorks QS systems.

Lutron is a household name in lighting and shade control.  HomeWorks QS seamlessly integrates the control of electric light and daylight, as well as integrates with audio/visual and HVAC systems, all while saving energy.

Lutron offers several control keypad styles—each advantageous for a different use in the home.  For instance, your client may choose a simple two-button keypad for the common entrance.  When arriving home in the evening, they can press a single button to brighten key entry points as well as specific exterior lights.

Rather than having six switches lined up on a wall, eliminate wall clutter with the dynamic keypad.  Use it to adjust lights, shades, HVAC and audio/visual equipment from one convenient location.  With one touch of the “Energy” button, your client can dim lights and lower shades reducing heating or cooling costs.

No one understands the importance of proper lighting better than interior designers and space planners.  Creating varying levels and layers of light gives each room its own look and feel.  Layers of light highlight artwork, architectural details, collections, or specific pieces of furniture.

Lutron HomeWorks QS is now compatible with an iPhone®, iPod touch®, or iPad®.  Clients can easily check the status of lights, shades, and HVAC while away from home.  Having total home control from anywhere is an easy way to save energy and ensure security.

To discuss Lutron’s offerings, please call Mark at 972-238-9888, or visit www.ultramedia.biz.

  • Home Automation for Convenience

Electronic Systems Consultants Install Home Automation for Convenience, Comfort, and Safety

RICHARDSON, Texas 04/01/2010 — Using a reputable Electronic Systems Consultant (ESC) to design and install your clients’ next home automation system will ensure their convenience, comfort, and safety.  Home automation/systems integration provides convenient, centralized access to various home technologies.  For example, from a touch screen, homeowners can control lighting, thermostats, locks, pool, sprinklers, blinds, curtains, and media systems.  Centralized, one-touch control is expected in all new cars, and clients are requesting this same level of convenience in their homes.

What is systems integration?  Simply put, it’s the craft of making diverse home technologies (like those listed above) work together.  For example, a homeowner is tired of going to the garage to turn on the sprinklers, the front door to set the alarm, and several different rooms to turn off lights at night.  Home automation allows her to go to a keypad, and do all that and more with the press of a button.

And what is home automation?  It’s programming these technologies to operate at certain times, in certain ways—their function becomes automated.

There are two primary control choices: keypads and touch screens.  Keypads are typically less expensive, and good for seldom-used rooms.  Touch screens provide the most versatility and control, and can be located in a wall, on a tabletop, or held by hand.  They are icon driven, much like an iPhone.  An added bonus: some touch screens double as a TV or computer monitor.

Do your clients know this technology exists?  If not, you’re missing business.  Does your client have enough information to visualize an integrated home?  If not, most ESCs have demo rooms or homes where your client can see, hear, and touch these systems and experience them firsthand.

These systems must be professionally engineered in order to function correctly, meeting the clients’ expectations—and ESCs should be a part of the design team.  The earlier you include an ESC in the project planning, the better, as an ESC will help plan for the future.

Some designers have relied on electricians to wire for home technology, unaware that media equipment has its own set of requirements.  Does the system meet building codes, ensuring safety for a client?  Proper ventilation cools electronics, thereby increasing their life and durability.  What terminations are required of the electrical and low-voltage cabling?  A qualified ESC will coordinate with your builders, architects, and other subcontractors regarding the placement and functionality of controls, outlets, and redundant interfaces for various subsystems.

Find an ESC who is a licensed, low-voltage contractor.  Choose an ESC that has certified and trained staff.  Are they insured?  Are they a direct dealer for the products they sell?  (This is extremely important when it comes to warranty issues.)  How many installations like yours have they done?  Can you see them?  Are they familiar with the latest technology at all levels?  Do they have references?  Do they offer programming and installation in house?  Do they employ a dedicated service crew?  A dedicated project manager?

  • UltraMedia Attends the Custom Electronics Design and Installation Association EXPO

UltraMedia, Inc. Attends the Custom Electronics Design and Installation Association EXPO

Richardson, TX , October 15, 2010 - UltraMedia attended the Custom Electronics Design and Installation Association’s  (CEDIA) EXPO in Atlanta, GA last month.  CEDIA EXPO is to the audio/video industry what METROCON is to the area design/build industry--but on a national scale.  EXPO highlighted technological advances in TVs, Apple products, home health care, and old-fashioned turntables!

Many manufacturers demonstrated further evolution of the television.   TVs are getting thinner and thinner--one was so thin it folded!  Speakers are following suit—thinner, to match the TVs with which they will be paired.  Both TVs and speakers can be flush-mounted.  Televisions are becoming more multifunctional: mirrored, and available in every color imaginable.

Several manufacturers sported technologies using the popular Apple interfaces.  Use your iPhone and iPad to control of nearly every home system: televisions, house music, broadcast photos, lighting, and energy management.

Featured in the spotlighted Technology Pavilion was home health care, which will become more and more important as baby boomers age.  Manufacturers of this technology asked us why interior designers aren’t jumping onto the “aging” bandwagon.  Monthly, there are new milestones in making getting older easier.  For instance, relatives can monitor an aged loved one’s vital statistics, movement from room to room, and whether medications are taken on time.

Surprisingly, there has been a resurgence in the interest of vinyl records!  Audiophiles are deciding that nothing sounds better than old-fashioned LPs.  Be prepared to design around the wide array of new turntable systems that are gaining popularity.

“While there was not a revolutionary technology revealed, CEDIA exhibitors showed their commitment to fulfilling the demands of the clients the AV industry serves,” said Pat Johnson, President of UltraMedia.

  • Technology in Frank Lloyd Wright-Inspired

UltraMedia, Inc. Provides Technology in Frank Lloyd Wright-Inspired Lake Home

RICHARDSON, Texas,  10/12/2009 – UltraMedia, Inc. recently completed installation of a state-of-the-art, multi-technology system in a newly constructed home on a beautiful east Texas lake.  This 6,000-square-foot Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired home boasts a $200,000+ home technology system, including integrated audio, video, cameras, lighting, HVAC, and driveway gate.

Special features include a gathering room with a completely hidden surround system and a drop-down video screen.  The television in the master bedroom is also hidden, and rises out of a motorized, custom cabinet.  The boat house provides audio, remotely controlled, for deck parties.  A central media server distributes music and movies throughout the house.

Some of the technology includes: Elan AV distribution, Envive media server, Integra electronics, RTI remotes, Sony flat panel TVs, and Triad speakers.

“Working with interior designer Mary Anne Smiley was a pleasure.  Communication between all parties was timely and thorough.  Any problems we encountered were due strictly to Mother Nature,” said Mike Brock, lead designer and project manager.  (Brock designed the technology in Dallas’ 2009 St. Jude Dream Home.)

Of unique challenge to the installers was the flat roof (no attic space), characteristic of Wright’s designs, which dictated critical planning prior to start.

  • UltraMedia, Inc. Offers Surprising Alternatives for Television Placement

UltraMedia, Inc. Offers Surprising Alternatives for Television Placement

RICHARDSON, Texas, 07/23/2009 — UltraMedia, Inc. is not only in the business of designing home entertainment systems—often, interior designers call upon us to provide unusual solutions for television placement.

Televisions are not an option—they are a must—in residential room design. Every room in the house: from den to dining. They are our connection with the outside world.  They provide entertainment during family time. They’re considered another tool in the kitchen. And homeowners love the security of eyeing who’s at the front door from the privacy of their bedroom.

As designers of home technology, we love the unique challenge each home poses in the placement of the ever-present television. But, aesthetics are often unnecessarily compromised when integrating video into a design—video location almost always dictates the room arrangement.  When approaching this challenge, we consider two things: first, we must thrill our client with a great viewing experience. Second, the room must be aesthetically pleasing. Unless we’re designing a game room or home sports bar, it often means disguising the technology—hiding that ever-important television.

We are often forced to think outside the box with our designs.  When there isn’t an obvious location for a TV, we employ automation. With automation, we can hide electronics. Operation is easy! From a single touch-screen, remote press the “Watch TV” button, and viola! the TV emerges from under the bed! (Talk about front-row seats!)  Not only does the make the TV easy to see, but it’s completely out of the way when it’s off.

In sitting areas, automation frees design creativity by asking the television to appear only when it’s needed. Motorized mounts are programmed to position a video screen at a perfect viewing angle. Turn the TV off, and the unit moves back to its hiding place. A TV can rise out of a cabinet and return when not in use. There are countless options for creative video placement—no longer must it be front and center. Consult a designer of interior technology, and design your room around your vision—not the television!

UltraMedia, Inc. Grows Despite Economic Downturn

Richardson, Texas, 04/23/2009 – UltraMedia, Inc. is pleased to announce the addition of staff and expansion of service offerings.  While the economy slowed in many sectors, UltraMedia witnessed an increase in demand for home electronics systems, and responded by adding staff and expanding services.

In the first quarter of 2009, UltraMedia added two full-time systems designers, responsible for the design and careful management of each home system installation.  Systems designers work with interior designers, overseeing UltraMedia’s installation staff, and bringing the homeowners’ vision for their home technology to reality. The 4-man design staff boasts almost 60 years in the industry.  “We are fortunate to be the repository of so much experience and knowledge; each day I’m more impressed with the people I get to spend my work day with. Our team keeps getting better with each addition,” offered Pat Johnson, company President.

Kevin’s installations have received awards from the Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association (CEDIA).

Ryan Hamilton (designer) is a CEDIA-Certified Professional Installer, working on his Designer certification. Ryan’s two years with UltraMedia as a lead installer prepared him for his design position. For Ryan, the vast array of products creates an opportunity to be creative in his designs. Consistently receiving praise from clients, Ryan says, “I have always enjoyed customer referrals; those are the greatest compliments.” Hunting, mountain biking, and camping all recharge Ryan. He also enjoys exploring mixing A/V and computers: “the ‘wild west’ of today.” David Capps (lead technician) has been in the home A/V systems industry for 11 years, and is certified to install Crestron, Elan, Lutron, and Runco. His special skill is trouble-shooting systems, and thrives on learning. When he’s not installing, he enjoys riding ATVs and spending time with his son. Chris Reynolds (lead technician) brings over 11 years of experience to UltraMedia. Chris’ peers say that perseverance is one of his greatest strengths: time after time they witness his commitment to doing the job right the first time, every time. Chris is also a favorite of UltraMedia clients.

Eric Hines (lead technician) boasts 19 years installing residential technology systems. He’s always ready for a challenge, and can’t think of much that he hasn’t encountered—and overcome—on a job site.

    PRESS RELEASE

Richardson, Texas, 10/08/2007 – The Greater Dallas Chapter of NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) will be hosting the Greater Dallas 2007 Remodeled Homes Tour this weekend.  Of the 13 Dallas-area homes selected for the tour, one is located at 5828 Joyce Way in Preston Hollow.  Just a year ago this home was like most homes in the Park Cities—rich in history, but not wired for modern home technology.  By working closely with the homeowner and Key Renovations, UltraMedia, Inc. integrated the audio, video, security, and automation systems of this Cape Cod-style home.  The new technology is aesthetically pleasing, intuitive, and future proof.  With planning, UltraMedia was able to incorporate many modern luxuries: a plasma in the outdoor living area, a flat-screen in the master bath, play-area cameras, and easy touch-screen controls.

UltraMedia staff will be on site this weekend to answer questions for homeowners who are interested in learning more about updating their home with the newest technology.  System designers can advise attendees on particular technology issues, or answer general questions about what is required to convert a space to a home theater.

UltraMedia, Inc. is considered an interior architect of residential technologies, specializing in high-end installations.  UltraMedia is an active member of CEDIA (Consumer Electronics Design and Installation Association) and has an impeccable history with the Better Business Bureau.

UltraMedia designers and installers boast over 125 years in the industry, combined.  In addition to our client base of private homeowners, UltraMedia is the preferred technology provider for a number of metroplex custom builders and remodelers.  This year UltraMedia was chosen the “Most Dependable Home Theater Business in the Central Region” by Gold Line research.
